• Portland Public Schools Board of Education

The School Board is comprised of seven elected members serving four-year terms. Every year, the Board elects their Chair and Vice Chair. Board members are community volunteers and do not receive compensation for their work. The School Board is the policy-making body of our school district. It is responsible for providing an education program for students living within the District.

To accomplish its role, the Board:

    • Determines the long-range direction of the District
    • Establishes policies that direct the instructional and support programs
    • Employs and evaluates the Superintendent
    • Communicates with the community
    • Approves collective bargaining agreements
    • Calls elections on bond proposals
    • Approves the annual budget
    • A student Board Representative, selected by the high school student body, serves as an unofficial voting member for one year to represent the students and report on the various high school activities.

    Public Involvement

The public is invited to attend public Board meetings to gain a better understanding of school district business and the role of the School Board.  The public is also invited to address the Board during the public comment portion of the Board meetings. If you would like to sign up for public comment, please send an email with your first and last name, your school community, and topic to PublicComment@pps.net or call the Board Office at 503-916-3741. Requests for public comment will be processed in the order that they are received. Email and phone requests should be received by 12:00 pm the day of the meeting. Walk-up requests are taken, if space is available, in the fifteen minutes prior to the meeting (and must be received prior to the start of the meeting).  Please note, public comment by any individual is limited to one time every 30 days. Written public comments may be sent to PublicComment@pps.net.

    Notice of Public Meetings

To find out when meetings are scheduled:

  • PUBLIC MEETING GUIDELINES FOR CONDUCT
    English

The following guidelines apply to all public comment:

    1. All members of the public attending Board meetings should treat each other and the Board with respect.
    2. Individuals should not interfere with the ability of others to watch the Board meetings or to offer comments to the Board outside of the public comment period, or otherwise interfere with the ability of the Board to conduct its business.
    3. Placards, signs, and banners may be displayed only in the auditorium foyer behind the seating area and may not block anyone else’s view of the proceedings. Placards, signs, and banners may not have wooden or metal sticks or poles attached to them.
    4. Members of the public who want to offer comments to the Board must sign up before the start of each Board meeting. The Board may limit the number of speakers, the time for public comment, or the inclusion of public comment on an agenda. We ask Portland Public Schools students to identify themselves on the comment sign-in sheet so they can be called upon first.
    5. Individuals who sign up to provide public comment to the Board must indicate the topic of their planned comments.
    6. There is a designated table and microphone in front of the Board for individuals to use in sharing public comment.

The Portland Public Schools Board of Education greatly values the input of community members in making important decisions that affect Portland’s students. We also welcome and encourage all to observe board meetings. Each speaker will have three minutes for comments during regular Board meetings. Speaking times may differ for other meetings; any change will be publicly noticed ahead of time. Any person who fails to comply with reasonable rules of conduct or who causes a disturbance during a meeting may be asked or required to leave.

Waxaan sidoo kale soo dhaweynaynaa isla markaana ku dhiirigelinaynaa dadka oo dhan in ay la socdaan kulamada Guddiga. Kuwa doorta in ay bixiyaan talooyin dadweyne waa in ay ogaadaan tilmaamaha soo socda:

    1. Dhammaan xubnaha ka tirsan bulshada ee ka qayb galaya kulamada Guddiga waa in uu midba midka kale iyo Guddigaba ula dhaqmaa si ixtiraam leh.
    2. Dadku waa in aysan soo faragelin awooda dadka kale ay ku fiirsanayaan kulamada Guddiga ama aysan talooyin ku siin Guddiga meel ka baxsan waqtiga talooyinka dadweynuhu soo jeedinayaan loogu talagalay, ama haddii kale aysan soo faragelin awooda ay guddigu ku qabsanayso shaqadeeda.

Warqado wax sharraxaya, calaamado iyo waxyaabo wax muujinaya ma aha in ay yeeshaan ul alwaax ama bir ka sameysan ama tiirar ku dhegisan.
    4. Xubnaha ka tirsan bulshada ee doonaya in ay talooyin siiyaan Guddiga waa in ay isdiiwaan geliyaan ka hor inta aanu bilaabmin kulan Guddi oo kastaa. Guddigu waxay xaddidi kartaa tirada dadka goobta ka hadlaya, waqtiga loogu talagalay talooyinka dadweynuhu soo jeedinayaan, ama ku darista ajandaha ee talooyinka dadweynuhu soo jeediyaan. Waxaan ka codsanaynaa ardayda Dugsiyada Dadweynaha Portland in ay magacooda ku sheegaan xaashida isdiiwaan gelinta ee talada lagu dhiibanayo si marka hore loogu waco.
    5. Dadka isku diiwaan geliya in ay talooyin dadweyne siiyaan Guddigu waa in ay tilmaamaan qoddobka ay qorsheysteen in ay talooyin ka dhiibtaan.
